Private alternatives to welfare. WTF? No profit maximizing firm is going to prevent someone who fails at life from starving to death. As a society we've deemed it more acceptable to lower the GDP than it is to allow anyone to starve to death. That is why we have welfare. If you don't like the system, then move to Croatia. They let people starve to death there, but at least they maximize production. Do we punish people for things that aren't their fault? I guess we'll agree to disagree.

The free market doesn't solve all problems. The free market invites monopolies, which cause deadweight loss because they don't produce enough goods to meet total demand. They sell enough goods to meet the demand for the high price level they set. This maximises their profit. Also, if the goal of the economy is happiness, then we cannot allow 5% of the country to control 50% of its wealth.
